bill gates is the antichrist
I took today off work to be able to volunteer at our son's school and have "thanksgiving" lunch with him (he loves everything but the stuffing, and I love the stuffing but everything else is school cafeteria salty-gooey-gacky, so it works out well). Curse you, Windows-based PC!
Two weeks ago we spent 200 bucks just to backup our files off this POS when some .dll file or other went missing or screwy and we were without boot. Then came the "system recovery" that recovered only the crap that Microsoft and Compaq saw fit to shovel into this beast, so I spent a whole Saturday re-installing/downloading all of the applications that weren't too expensive to replace. (I am beginning to regret being the computer guru - idiot though I am - in the house.)
Of course, we lost our anti-spyware/anti-virus protection in the "recovery," so somehow during all that downloading (including downloading anti-spyware/anti-virus protection - IRONY!) we got screwed again and the wheels came off again last night. So instead of volunteering this morning, I spent two hours trying to load Norton Internet Security, then canceling that when it couldn't for whatever reason remove the tiny piece of old Norton that the system recovery failed to kill, then running to Target to buy McAfee (too chicken to download anything else at that point), then installing it and fighting my way through the thousands of popups that the McAfee will hopefully kill once it gets done with its now 5-hour long scan.
Time to be a good hausfrau and do some laundry; more in a bit (and not about my effing computer).
But take my advice ... Buy a Mac!

Wow, that sucks. Here's a tip for ya, there are MANY programs you can use that are completely free. These are in addition to using McAfee. I recommend Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and SpywareBlaster to start. If you do a search online you should be able to find them. Or check out my blog cause I got links to them as well.
